At Electrogenic we have long been intrigued by the concept of a light, well-balanced, rear-wheel-drive electrified modern-classic, one that truly delivers when it comes to the old-school thrill of driving. It seems we weren’t alone, as we’ve received a great deal of interest in the idea of an MX-5 / Miata conversion. It’s exciting to finally reveal our creation to the world and give MX-5 fans the chance to electrify one of the most popular sports cars in history.
The electrified MX-5 weighs only 100kg more than the original ICE car, at circa 1,100kg. Post conversion, the weight distribution remains identical, with the power to weight ratio improved by 21%. The re-engineered powertrain is direct drive (no manual gearbox) and the extra power, immediate throttle response and perfect weight balance all enhance this true driver’s car.
The kit is designed for an MX-5 / Miata Type 1, but can be easily adjusted to fit a Type 2 as well. Pre-order now for shipping from April 2025.


The Mazda MX-5 / Miata is compact, so the whole of the engine bay is used for batteries, with additional batteries located in the rear subframe, replacing the fuel tank. The motor and fixed-ratio reduction gear sit in the tunnel, reducing the length of the prop shaft and the transmission to rear-end brace – replacements are included in the kit. This mid-engine positioning also helps preserve the original weight balance.
As with all Electrogenic kits, Electrogenic proprietary electronics are included to re-purpose the existing dashboard, and three drive modes are provided as standard: sports, traffic and eco.

Thanks to the increase in power – up from 116bhp in the ICE car – the electrified MX-5 / Miata is quicker and more nimble than the original. The 0-60mph acceleration is around 6 seconds and the car runs on to a top speed of 115mph. With its super-light weight and instant torque, performance is effortless – giving the MX-5 excellent flexibility whatever the speed. Thanks to the immediate torque, it is also easier than ever before to enjoy the convertible’s famed RWD handling balance.
