Electrogenic is delighted to bring to you it’s EV conversion kit, designed for FD and JD Harley Davidsons and conceived by Jason Momoa – see it in action here. The kit enables you to:

  • freely switch between 100% petrol, 100% EV or both together – as you drive;
  • use the EV motor to start your engine, either on the stand or on the road; or
  • get a bike with a seized engine back on the road as an EV.

Choose options

The kit comprises:

  • a replacement rear wheel with a Maeving RM1S hub motor with a chain sprocket at its centre
  • powder-coated aluminium saddlebags containing some electronics and two removable Maeving batteries
  • brake disc, callipers, master cylinder and header tank
  • throttle potentiometer and wiring harness.

The saddlebags come powder-coated in black, but you can cover them with canvass or leather – or anything else that takes your fancy. The saddlebags are mostly full of batteries and electronics, but there is room for lunch in the right pannier!

The wiring, the throttle and the placement of the brake master cylinder require a little engineering by the person fitting the kit, because every Harley from this era is a little different. The rest is just plug and play though – the rear wheel fits right in and the saddlebags clamp directly to a standard Harley Davidson rear rack.

The kit comes with full instructions and support via WhatsApp (message or voice).

Specifiation

  • 15 hp (11kW), 190 ft.lb (260Nm) Maeving hub motor
  • 2 x 2.7kWh removable Maeving batteries
  • EV-only range – about 50 miles, depending on the weight of the bike and how fast you ride
  • Hydraulic rear-wheel disc brake

The EV rear wheel

The kit comes with a motor built into a rear wheel. 20” wheel rims are hard to come by so as standard we can supply 21” wheels with 1.85”. 2.15” or 3” rims. Standard supply would be bare steel rims with stainless steel spokes. Chrome, satin or gloss black rims, and black spokes are available as optional extras.

The 3” rims look great with later JD models but be careful before ordering a 3”, as sourcing suitable period tyres that will fit both the rims and the bike is difficult. For Jason’s 1927 JD we fitted modern tyres.

Alternatively if you would like a different rim, you can supply it to us and we will fit the motor into it. The rim would need to be new and undrilled (no holes for the spokes).

All the rims we fit are standard, so if you want to source a matching front wheel locally this should be no problem.

Luggage rack

The panniers bolt to a standard Harley luggage rack for the period. Unfortunately these are not being made at the moment, but if you don’t have one, we can supply one that is a reasonable – but not exact – reproduction.

FAQs

What is it like to drive with EV and petrol together?

It’s a rocket! Buyer beware!

And remember the petrol engine needs you to manage the advance and the carburation, just like before.

Does the bike feel heavier?

With both batteries in, the kit makes the bike about 35kg (75lb) heavier (about 15%), but the weight is low and having fitted this kit to a number of bikes, you don’t notice it on the road.

How does it help start your engine?

This is a fantastic feature of this kit. Basically you start the electric motor, run it up, then put the bike into second gear and effectively bump-start it. You can do this on the stand or on the move.

Do I need to have a full workshop to fit the kit?

No, but you do need to know your way around a Harley and you will need to be able to fabricate and fettle some of the parts. In particular, every bike we have fitted this kit to has required us to fit the brake cylinder in a different place on the bike, so you will need to make a bracket for this and a rod to connect the cylinder to the foot pedal. Similarly the lever on top of the carburettor needs modification and you will need to fabricate around this. You make also want to change the placement of the control button.

Are the panniers removable?

Yes, it is about a 15 minute job. You end up with a motor tail and a control loom that need to be tucked away. If you talk to us we can supply a dummy socket for you to mount to the bike, to plug the end of the motor tail into to keep it out of the way.

The motor is happy being disconnected and turned without power while the engine is powering the bike.

How long does the kit take to arrive?

The kit is manufactured to order. It takes about 4 weeks to manufacture and about two weeks air-freight from the UK to the USA.
